 Crazy Jungle Love, the shocking tale of love and despair based on the true story of American millionaire John Felix Bender’s exploits in the jungles of Costa Rica, is now available on Amazon and Kindle.
Written by journalist Carol Blair Vaughn, Crazy Jungle Love makes use of Vaughn’s intimate knowledge of Latin America and her extensive coverage of the Bender saga for The Costa Rica Star.
Bender moved to the wildest part of lush Costa Rica with his exotic wife and 600 million dollars – then wound up shot dead in his own bedroom – his wife accused of his murder.
CNN, 48Hours, CBS News, and other international media outlets all covered this love/murder story, but Vaughn has fleshed out all the grim details of an American couple who came to Costa Rica with a dream of establishing a nature reserve, but their lives began to unravel and John wound up dead, leaving his wife penniless, with no passport, in a Costa Rican prison.
John’s mysterious death remains unsolved.

Ann Patton Bender Faces Difficult Life in Costa Rica Prison

Posted: 22 May 2019 02:24 PM PDT American citizen, Ann Patton Bender, who was accused of murdering her husband, John Felix Bender, in Costa Rica in 2010, has been moved out of the ICU, and into the women’s prison, El Buen Pastor, located in San Rafael Arriba de Desamparados, in San Jose. Ms. Bender has been sentenced to 22 years for first-degree murder, following an initial acquittal of the charges in January 2013, of killing John Bender on August 8, 2010, in the bedroom of their 5,000 acre estate, which they called Boracayan, in Perez Zeledon. In Costa Rica, both the convicted and prosecutors are able to file appeals to court decisions, which led to the retrial and conviction of Ann Bender in May.  Ms. Bender now shares a module with forty other inmates at Buen Pastor.
